The
ban on alcohol was first implied in Haryana during the reign of Lt. Banshi Lal,
former chief minister of Haryana. This ban made a remarkable impact on his vote
bank during elections and he won the elections with a vast majority. This ban
of alcohol, which lead to the formation of government, had to be removed. Why
was it removed? The answer to this is highly critical. Due to the ban of
alcohol there was an increase in the number of Mafia in Haryana. The alcohol
sold legally for Rs 100 was being sold illegally at a rate of Rs 300 a bottle.
This was due to the increased demand due to the fact that drinking had become a
“Symbol of Status”. Hence, people who never consumed alcohol showed interest in
drinking after the ban. Restrictions give rise to curiosity and this is what
happened in this case. Contrary to the belief, banning alcohol lead to the rise
in its consumption and people were encouraged to take to drinking. Lt Banshi
Lal was highly praised for his estimation and calculations related to this issue
and later he removed this ban in order to stop these mishaps.
While
in Gujarat, all types of alcohol were available during the ban at prices that
were two to four folds of the original price. The Mafia were overpowering the
government and according to intellectuals, the Gujarat Government was
indirectly involved in this disgusting act. In the end, it was the commoners
who suffered and this did not benefit the government well.
Bihar
will also face dire consequences of the alcohol ban sometime later. These types
of acts are done by political leaders in order to gain popularity among the
people. On one hand they tend to gain their support and on the other hand
support criminal activities and rob the poor commoners. By having nexus between
politicians and criminal, politics is becoming filthy and the image of
political leaders is getting ruined day by day.
There
is a need of educating the people rather than implementing bans. Why do people
consume alcohol in our country? There is an urgent need to find the answers to
these questions on which no one gave a thought. Following are the reasons for
the same:
1. Drinking
is not termed as a good act in our society.
2. There
is a proper way of drinking in leisure, with snacks and drinking in a limited
amount.
There
should be discipline in drinking, as in our country, uneducated people commit
heinous acts after drinking.
Drinking
is common in many developed nations due to its health benefits.
3. Family
lives are at stake if one takes to drinking. Wives wish that their husbands stay
at home and drink rather than going outside. They are also ready to accompany
them with cold drinks and snacks, and make them to concentrate more on their
family to drink in their limits.
People take to massive
drinking in groups in order to prove their manhood in society and this is one
of the biggest problems of our country. When I was a kid studying in 5th
standard, army officers used to share drinks with me mixed with soft drinks.
Drinking was not considered to be bad in my family due to modern thoughts. Due
to this I was trained to drink in my limits and thus every parent should
befriend their kids and not restrict them. They should allow them to enjoy life
in a disciplined manner.
If there is a ban on
alcohol, it will not stop people from intoxicating and they will turn to other
forms to satisfy their urge. The other substances are not to be named as it
might act as wrong information for those who are unaware of it. It is just a
clear indication to the government.
The government should
take necessary steps to curb the locally made alcohol drinking in our country
before it destroys many homes and causes harm to a large number of people. The
government should take strict steps to control and stop
all these acts that might cause great harm in future.
